The release of The Great Gatsby next week has both beauty lovers and movie critics excited for a blast back to the Roaring Twenties. With hairstyles and makeup inspired by the decade in the spotlight (thanks to the recent excitement surrounding the movie), even the world of nail art has decided to embrace the trend. The following tutorial gives tips for getting a 1920s-style half moon manicure at home:

Materials: Make sure you have all your materials ready, since there is nothing more frustrating than interrupting a half-dry manicure to pick something up. You will need paper reinforcement stickers or French manicure tip stickers, an opaque polish in a bright colour (the vintage red in the video looks fantastic!), top coat, and a small pair of scissors or tweezers.

1) If your own nails are currently short, you can use artificial tips to extend the length, or just aim for a shorter manicure.

2) Place a strip of the reinforcement sticker on each nail to cover the “half moon” area just above the cuticle, and a French manicure tip above the half moon on your thumbnail. Use the scissors/tweezers to trim the stickers for both a better finish and nail polish which stays inside the lines!

3) When your stickers are firmly in place, start applying a vibrant nail polish (such as OPI Red Lights Ahead).

4) If you like, fill in the half moons with a white polish or another colour, or leave them as is. Apply your top coat, and you’re done!
